In a truly grotesque scene his greed overcomes him as he digs through the remains of the humans he once buried, stealing their most precious gems, his debts already a memory.īut sadly for Masson he has broken one of the biggest moral taboos: disrupting a grave. In a claustrophobic hunt for riches, Masson follows them, eventually coming up against an immensely large and nightmarish rat. Once again, though, he's been beaten by his rodent foes as the rats drag the body out of the coffin and into the caverns below the graveyard. After visiting the morgue and hearing that a recently dead aristocrat will be buried with priceless treasure, Masson heads to the grave. Masson's fear of rats and his feud with the ones who live in his cemetery have long been established by the time we reach the crux of this episode. But this gothic period piece has a different kind of monster in mind as David Hewlett's graverobber Masson digs into the depths of the graveyard he's supposed to be protecting in order to find some unholy treasure. The second episode of Cabinet of Curiosities fits perfectly with Lot 36, as it's another yarn about a man deeply in debt who will go to any lengths to pay it off. After all, if Nick had shown her the smallest modicum of kindness then Miss Amelia may have helped him. It's a classic ending that leans into the traditions of morality tales in horror. ![]() Understandably she leaves him to rot-as she had earlier wished he would-and Nick is soon devoured by the demon. As he reaches the locked door, he sees Miss Amelia and asks her to please open the door explaining that he's in great danger. It immediately slurps up the auctioneer, while Nick manages to escape. In his desperation to get the rare occult book and the money that the auctioneer has promised him, Nick disrupts the protective spell around the demon, setting it free. It's revealed her body was used to transport a tentacled demon to Earth. Inside is a decrepit corpse, the sister of the man who once owned the unit. Joined by an aucitoneer who is eager to find a book in the Nazi treasure trove, the pair uncover a secret room in the unit. Leaning into del Toro's love for monsters, the episode ends as Nick's greed causes him to unleash a fearsome demon. But Nick cruelly refuses and that's a decision that seals his fate. That same day, a Mexican woman-Miss Amelia (Elpidia Carrillo)-begs Nick to let her see what family keepsakes she can salvage from her old unit which he had previously bought at another sale. One fateful day he wins an auction on a storage unit with strange dimensions filled with Nazi memorabilia. Setting up an opening double bill about the nature of greed and how it can drive men to the darkest of places, Tim Blake Nelson stars in this bleak moral fable about a bitter racist, Nick, who's paying off a debt by bidding on abandoned storage units and reselling their contents. ![]()
